Rocklin lands four on volleyball All League

Volleyball

The Sierra Foothill League has released its 2012 All League selections for varsity volleyball to include four players from Rocklin High School.

Thunder players making the team were Jolie Meade, Bethany Mandon, Shelby Sanders and Kate Mitchell. Sanders is a senior and Meade, Mandon and Mitchell are juniors.

Rocklin, 27-14 and 7-3 in league finished second in the SFL standings. The Thunder advanced to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Playoff’s semifinals before eliminated by Gregori.

Basketball

BURLINGTON, Vt. _ Former Whitney High School basketball player Derek Knutty began his senior-year campaign as the co-captain of the Purple Knights of St. Michaels College.

The former Wildcats’ athlete scored 19 points and had 17 rebounds in the Knights’ opening wins over the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, 69-60 (Nov. 25), and New York Institute of Technology, 61-51 (Nov. 20).

Last season, the 6-foot, 7-inch junior was second on the team in blocked shots with 16.

At Whitney High, Knutty led the Wildcats to a 22-8 season as a senior earning a Pioneer Valley League championship. He averaged almost 15 points a game and nearly 11 rebounds. The ‘Cats lost in the quarterfinals of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Playoffs that year.

The son of Rocklin’s David and Laura Knutty, Derek Knutty is majoring in business and pursuing accounting as a minor. David Knutty played basketball at California State University Sacramento and Derek’s brother played football and rugby for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Golf

MOUNTAIN VIEW _ Rocklin’s Grant Leppek shot rounds of 84 and 82 to win the 36-hole Boys Under 14 Division of the International Junior Golf Tour tournament held at Moibhi Tyndall Golf Course last month.

The IJGT hosts tournaments throughout the United States for young golfers ages 9-19. The membership includes golfers from 45 states and 43 countries.

Past members include the PGA’s Webb Simpson, Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan and the LPGA’s Paula Creamer.
