Nevada Union shot better from the floor but the Rocklin boys basketball defense just wouldn’t give them enough shots as the Thunder rolled to an 80-61 Sierra Foothill League victory last Friday.

The Miners shot almost 55 percent from the field but only put up 42 shots to Rocklin’s 62. Nevada Union’s big man, Lucas Vojak, caused some problems underneath but Rocklin’s bench kept him from taking control.

When Thunder center Hayden Cook picked up fouls, Spence Gregg and Trent Peterson filled in nicely. Vojak scored 13, five from the free-throw line.

“We’re starting to come around; we’re starting to get it,” said Rocklin head coach Casey Cutts as to his club’s defense. “Early in the year, we were really good at stopping people at half court. We tried to evolve a little bit and we’re starting to do it and we’re starting to come around.”

The win put the Thunder (4-3) in a tie with Del Oro (4-3) just one game behind league-leading Granite Bay (5-2).

Eight Rocklin players scored with four in double digits. Devin Moss led the club with 16; Drew Ardissone scored 14, Cook 13 and Vinnie Safin 11. Sophomores Safin and Max O’Rourke combined to put up 19 points for the Thunder.

“The team played great tonight. I’m really happy with what happened,” said Ardissone, after his team recovered from back-to-back losses to Granite Bay and Del Oro. “There was good sharing the ball, we flew around, we pressed; it was Rocklin basketball. The last two games we turned the ball over, we just did things we never did. We lost two games that we shouldn’t have.”

Del Oro took the momentum gained from its victory over Rocklin earlier in the week to rough up Granite Bay 72-56. Roseville improved to 4-3 with wins over the Grizzlies and Woodcreek.

The Thunder has three games remaining in regular season. They go on the road for games against the Tigers and the Timberwolves and return Feb. 12 for Senior Night and a rematch against Granite Bay.
