Rocklin High’s varsity girls tennis team has qualified for the playoffs for the first time in four years. The Thunder will face the Valley Oak League champion on Nov. 9 in a Sac-Joaquin Section, Division II playoff match. Rocklin clinched the second spot from the Sierra Foothill League with a 5-4 vic-tory at Del Oro last week. “We were down 4 -1 and Jamie Nakagawa’s match was slipping away and our No. 2 doubles team was feeling pressure,” Rocklin coach Dale Eckenburg said. “Then all of a sudden Jamie ran off four straight games and our doubles teams started to dominate.” Nakagawa won 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 while Rocklin’s No. 1 doubles team (Shannon Peiffer and Becca Kinsey) won 6-2, 6-1. Rocklin’s Amber Beebe and Jessica Miller won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 doubles to tie the match at 4-4. Meena Sandhu and Rachel Kim teamed up to win in three sets to give the Thunder the 5-4 win. “Rachel and Meena have really stepped up their tennis and solidified the No. 2 doubles spot,” Eckenburg said. “Rachel, only a freshman, has stepped in the last two matches and played consistent tennis while Meena, a senior, has provided leadership showing Rachel the ropes.” Courtnei Chance earned Rocklin’s first victory of the day, 6-4, 6-2 in singles.
