A sea of 2,900 people sporting blue shirts raced to the finish line at Johnson-Springview Park on Sunday for the eighth annual Run Rocklin. “It was just fun seeing the people on the sidelines cheering and saying ‘you can do it,’” said 19-year-old Hayden Olhiser, who traveled from Sonoma State University to participate in her first 5K. The spirit of the event was complimented by the upbeat music and the festive balloon arch near the finish line. Upon completion, each runner received a ribbon. Top finishers in each age group received a plaque and top overall finishers received a monetary award. Camron Shahmirzadi lead the men in the 5K with a time of 16:17 and Yvette Ferreira lead the women in the 5K with a time of 19:27. Clocking a 38:27, Brad Poore lead the men’s 12K, while Lindsay Nelson clocked a 44:35, leading the women in the 12K. The kids fun run .25-mile and 1-mile events were not timed, but children did receive a ribbon when finishing, too. Post-races activities included bounce houses and vendors such as Crunch Fitness and chiropractors who offered free spinal screenings. Places like Rubino’s Ristorante catered the event. “I got to see a bunch of different nature-like cattails and a little pond and I got to run with my family,” said 9-year-old Noelle Don, who said the course was one of her favorites. The event supports Rocklin schools and also benefits the Matt Redding Memorial Foundation, which gives scholarships to graduating seniors at Rocklin, Whitney and Del Oro high schools. Since 2006, Run Rocklin has helped the Matt Redding Memorial Foundation give more than $19,000 to 20 kids. In addition to Run Rocklin, the foundation’s other main fundraiser is a golf event, which is scheduled to take place in June. Run Rocklin Race Director Larry Osborne offered thanks to all of the participants, sponsors, and the city for their support.
