Rocklin seals soccer playoff spot in Grass Valley
By: Staff Report
It is usually not pretty when Sierra Foothill League soccer teams make the trek to Grass Valley to take on Nevada Union, but the game is not a beauty contest. Needing a win to secure its place in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs, the Rocklin High soccer team fought its way through a rough performance to beat Nevada Union 3-0 Thursday., “It was an ugly win yesterday, but a win nonetheless,” said Rocklin coach Grant Depue. “We played really sloppy soccer missing passes all throughout the midfield but the defense held strong to finish the game 3-0.” The Thunder were on the scoreboard a scant 90 seconds into the match on a Walter Finney goal, and then Finney found the net again three minutes later to double the early advantage. Cameron Powell scored the third Rocklin goal in the second half. As it turned out, Rocklin did not need the win, as Del Oro lost to Roseville in a game played simultaneously with this contest, and that loss would have pushed the Thunder into the postseason draw even without a win Thursday, but Depue is just happy to have arrived at the playoffs safely after a competitive SFL season. “We are excited to make the playoffs, especially after all the tough losses in the middle of the season,” Depue said. “I fully expect to have three SFL teams in the semifinals of the section playoffs. If we were able to get an at large bid for Del Oro then I’m sure they would be there as well.” “I am relieved the season is over and looking forward to playing a team we have not seen yet this year in Vista del Lago, the SVC league champs,” Depue said. “If things go the way we expect them to we will meet Roseville in the semifinals.” The first round game with Vista will be played at 3 p.m. Friday in Folsom.
