Rocklin student wins local speakers contest

Three Rocklin students recently competed in the Rocklin Lions Club annual student speakers contest. Rocklin High student Niraj Amalkanti will represent the city March 10 when he will be competing against students from Lincoln, Loomis, Newcastle and Auburn. On Feb. 2, Rocklin High students, including Amalkanti, Leandro Praseli and Rachel Williams competed in Rocklin Lions Club annual student speakers contest. Their teacher James Grace coached them and the Master of Ceremonies was Lion John Lehmann. A crowd of 25 Lions, parents and guests sat through the competition. Judges Chuck Kilbourne, Shirley Nagasawa and Dyanne Streff selected Amalkanti to represent Rocklin High School, the Rocklin Lions Club and the community of Rocklin at the Lions Zone Level competition. Lion dignitaries visiting the event were past district governor Richard DeCuir, Lion zone chairperson Susan Giles, Lion Bernadette DeCuir of the Folsom City Lions and Dusty Harrison of Newcastle-Golden Spike Lions. At 7 p.m. on March 10, Amalkanti will be competing against students at the Portuguese Hall on Taylor Road in Newcastle. ~ Staff report
