The Rocklin High School varsity girls tennis team recorded two wins over the week to secure its spot in the playoffs for the third consecutive year. Needing to beat Roseville for the final spot, the Thunder traveled to Roseville to face the Tigers on their own courts. “The first time we played them we dominated the third set winning all four of the tight matches,” said Rocklin head coach Dale Eckenburg. “This time we won the singles matches in two sets and took the third sets at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.” In singles action, the Thunder got their first victory from Shannon Peiffer at the no. 3 spot after taking the match in straight sets. Following Peiffer was junior Jessica Miller, who won easily after returning from right arm tendonitis. Molly Garcia-Kaer gave the Thunder their first lead with a 6-2, 7-5 victory. “These girls really came to play, I couldn’t have asked for more,” Eckenburg said. “They had tough matches the first time around but got off to a solid start and never looked back.” Thunder and Tigers looked to doubles to decide the match. Having dominated the Tigers in doubles the first time around confidence was definitely in Rocklin’s corner. Stepping into the starting role, Amber Calzada and Valerie Todd started strong to take the first set 6-4 and then finished off their opponents 6-0 in the second. Up 4-3, Rocklin held on to the final doubles matches winning in three sets to secure the 6-3 win, and a trip to the playoffs. Rocklin then beat Woodcreek 9-0 with No. 1 Stefanie Studen and No. 2 Shelby Kubota on the sidelines. “We played great and it really shows leadership when our top players are willing to sit to get more experience for the other girls,” Eckenburg said.
