The Rocklin girls tennis team again defeated Del Oro 5-4 in a rematch to secure the No. 2 spot in the Sierra Foothill League Saturday. Rachel Kim and Christina Dyok both won their matches in two sets. Thunder No. 2 player Jessica Miller came back from an opening 2-6 lost sweep the final two 6-1, 6-2. In the sixth match, Farrell Ahlf used patience and nearly three hours to defeat her opponent. “I told Farrell after the first set that she was going to have to wait out her opponent and do whatever it took for her to get the win.” said Rocklin head coach Dale Eckenburg. Eckenburg said the Golden Eagles had changed their strategy since the Thunder last played them. That helped Del Oro take matches one, three and five. In doubles, Amber Calzada and Valerie Todd topped their opponents 7-5 and 6-2. “They played great tennis. I can’t say enough about the play of Val and Amber this year,” said Eckenburg. Taylor McDougall and Alyssa Mattchen came back from a 3-6 set to seal Rocklin’s victory 7-6, 7-6. The Thunder have a match today against Granite Bay. “The first time around we lost 5-4 and continue to get better,” said Eckenburg. “The girls can’t wait to get another shot at the Grizzlies.”
