Great-nephew battling brain cancer; family’s possessions destroyed By Gloria Beverage Placer Herald Editor Linda Broussard, a resident of Rocklin since 1994, is planning a garage sale on Saturday. However, it’s not just any garage sale. It’s a benefit for her great-nephew, his parents and three siblings. Ruben Olivarez, 10, has been battling Medulloblastoma brain cancer since last June. The youth underwent surgery at Oakland Children’s Hospital and has had to endure several rounds of chemotherapy and radication. Shortly after Ruben finished the latest set of chemotherapy treatments, Broussard said, the family decided to take him to Los Angeles for a mini-vacation. While they were gone, the Olivarez’ Rio Linda home was burglarized and then set on fire – nearly destroying it, Broussard said. “The people who burglarized it set it on fire,” she said. “Everything of value (was taken before the fire).” In an effort to support her niece’s family, Broussard decided to host the garage sale and donate the proceeds to them. The benefit will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at her residence, 6214 Cameo Drive. “We need any garage sale items that you are able to donate,” she said. “Any items being donated should be dropped off at my home in Rocklin. Please, no mattresses or non-working appliances.” In addition, several local merchants have donated gift cards to give away during the benefit. Tickets to win one of the gift cards will be offered for a donation of $1 each, 3 for $2 or 10 for $5. The winner need not be present to win, she added. Any baby items left at the end of the day will be donated to Adventure Church of Rocklin, which provides these items to women in need in the community, Broussard explained. Other items will be sent to the American Cancer Society Thrift Store. Broussard is also asking for assistance to set up starting at 4 p.m. on Friday as well as for help during the sale. She indicated that her great-nephew seems to be doing well. Once a very active child, Ruben able to return to school for the first time in a year earlier this month.
