Joe Moulton of Roseville’s Morgan Creek Golf and Country Club lost in the finals of the 2008 Northern California PGA Assistant Apprentice Match Play Championship on Wednesday. The title match was won on the second playoff hole after Moulton was all square with Eric Goettsch of Carmel after the first 18 holes. The loss at Spyglass Hill in Pebble Beach ended a successful week for Moulton, who had won four matches on his way to the finals, as the field narrowed from 31 golfers at the outset to the final two. Moulton defeated Andre Gust of Lake Tahoe four and two in Monday’s first round, which was played at Quails Lodge Resort in Carmel. That opening round pared the field of 31 down to 16 golfers for Monday’s second round at Del Monte Golf Club in Monterey. In the second round, Moulton dominated Vacaville-based golfer Brandon Hill six and five to advance to the Tuesday morning quarterfinals. Moulton’s outstanding play continued with two more wins on Tuesday to advance to Wednesday’s final. He took his quarterfinal match three and two over Steve Watanabe from The Bridges Golf Club in San Ramon, before besting Ryan Farb of Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach four and two.
