Outside of Little League District 54 all-star tournament action, PONY baseball continues to be another league where Roseville is well represented.

Roseville PONY’s Pinto all-stars played Rocklin for the section tournament championship Friday while the Mustang all-stars played the Sierra Valley Storm in the winners’ bracket final at Whitney Ranch in Rocklin.

Unfortunately for Roseville fans, both teams lost. The Mustang team lost 11-5 to a Sierra Valley team loaded with hitters. Roseville plays Saturday against Rocklin to determine who will face Sierra Valley in the championship. The Pinto squad lost to Rocklin 12-4 in the title game.

Roseville’s Mustang team gave up three runs to Sierra Valley in the first inning. The Storm made it 6-2 in the fourth before exploding for five runs in the fifth.

“Too many mental mistakes on the bases, and we just didn’t quite play the defensive game,” Roseville head coach Pat Restori said.

Roseville scored in the first on an RBI single by Braden Holcomb. Cameron Jones drove in another run in the second. The team showed resilience in the top of the fifth when Jones drove in another two runs with a double to cut the lead to four.

Roseville’s all-stars have been playing together since the beginning of June and won the Gold Rush tournament against other PONY teams in the area. Friday’s loss was its first in the tournament.

Roseville came back Saturday to defeat Rocklin 10-6 in the losers’ bracket final but lost again to Sierra Valley 11-1 for the championship.

“To come this close and not win, even though we’re not happy with that, we’re right there,” Restori said.

Roseville’s Pinto team joined Rocklin in advancing to the Region Tournament in Tara Hills but lost its opener to Pittsburg 9-6. Roseville plays Tara Hills No. 2 at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Rocklin defeated Tara Hills No. 2 13-0 in its Region opener and will face Pittsburg at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
