Roseville softball coach honored by Sac-Joaquin Section

Jennifer Birch one of six 'model coaches'

Veteran Roseville High School softball coach Jennifer Birch has been named one of six recipients of the 2008-09 Sac-Joaquin Section Model Coach award. This is the eighth year that the section has been recognizing coaches with this award, which will be presented at the SJS awards breakfast in Stockton on April 21. The award honors coached who are positive role models within their schools and communities. The winners receive a plaque and a lifetime pass to all CIF SJS sporting events. The honorees are selected after a process that begins with each school in the section being permitted to nominate one male and one female coach from its staff. Those names go to the leagues, and each league then selects one male and one female coach for consideration by the section staff Birch was a stellar three-sport athlete, competing in softball, basketball and volleyball at Del Oro High School in Loomis. She returned to the Sierra Foothill League as a teacher and coach at Roseville, where she coached two years of JV softball before taking the head varsity position, which she has held for the past 11 years. She also coached one year of freshman basketball. Birch has been the school’s intramural coordinator for 11 years, a class adviser for four years and was named a Teacher Who Makes a Difference in 2007.
