Approximately 100 Sierra College students and staff consumed a free Italian lunch thanks to Rubino’s Ristorante in Rocklin last week. Feb. 1, the restaurant offered the first 100 Sierra College students and faculty a free lunch buffet. One of the owners, Henry Carrillo Jr., said that the event was a way to spread the word on their eatery. “To help out the students and to let them know we’re there,” Carrillo said. Rubino’s has been in Rocklin for the last four years and offers a discount to Sierra College students with the Sierra Advantage Card, yet many students do not know about the Italian restaurant. In the past, Rubino’s has participated in fundraisers such as Culture Day, but this was the first time they offered a free buffet to the students. On Jan. 31, Rubino’s passed out free appetizers to the students at the Sierra College Cafeteria as a way of advertising for the free lunch the following day. Carrillo added that he would potentially love to do another event like this in six to 12 months. He said that the students all reacted positively to the free buffet lunch. “It was great and they were totally appreciative and supportive of us,” Carrillo said. Many of the students and faculty had an overwhelming response of most definitely coming back to another free lunch buffet. “I may be here again whether they do it again,” said Bob Smith. Estefan Olivares added that it may be a good alternative for Valentine’s Day, compared to some other Italian restaurants in the area. “It is a good way to reach out,” Sameer Bhimani said of Rubino’s reaching out to one of their largest untouched markets — college students. “I think it’s really great. It’s really smart to offer a free buffet because if we like it, we can come back,” Jasmine Manglinong said. A lot of students also appreciated the free meal. “With books and other expenses we have, it’s always a big help,” Tonisha Skeaton said. “It’s free food and that helps with costs,” David Barga said. “It saves $5 to $10.” Rubino’s Ristorante is located at 5015 Pacific St. in Rocklin.
