I am a boy scout in Troop 349 and I am working on the communication merit badge. One of the requirements is to write to the editor of a newspaper. I wanted to use this opportunity to describe how great an organization the Boy Scouts is and to encourage boys to join. The Boy Scouts offers fun and valuable skills such as first aid, camping, boating, archery, orienteering, and many more. There are also a lot of campouts and outings like backpacking in the mountains, camping on the coast, snow camping, and exploring caves. The outings are always lots of fun. The best camping trip is Boy Scout Camp, a week of camping at one of the Boy Scout camps in the area. Many other troops participate. We take merit badge classes to earn merit badges and advance in rank. It is always a great experience and a lot of fun. After much hard work, commitment, and having a great time learning new things, a scout can achieve the Eagle Scout rank. Being an Eagle Scout shows strength of character and that you can commit to do something challenging and achieve a long-term goal. Derek DiGrande, Rocklin
