Sierra Christian boys favorite to reach section finals in DV

The Sierra Christian High varsity boys basketball team, ranked No. 1 in the Sac-Joaquin Section's Division V, will try to win a section title this week. The Bears, who have only six players on their roster, played No. 4 Forest Lake Christian of Auburn in Galt on Tuesday after press time. The winner advances to Friday's section title game at Arco Arena at 5:30 p.m. They will face either No. 2 Brookside Christian or No. 3 Big Valley Christian. Forest Lake Christian entered the game 20-9 while the Bears were 18-3. Sierra Christian, which went 10-0 while winning the Northern Pacific League title, had all six players score in a first-round victory (50-47) over visiting No. 16 Elliot Christian of Lodi on Feb. 20. The Bears trailed 20-5 after one quarter and 42-32 entering the fourth quarter but prevailed after dominating the fourth quarter 18-5. Scotty Ramirez led the Bears with 19 points while Caleb Murray (11 points), D.J. Pancho (eight), Shayne Jansma (seven), Kevin Mandawe (four) and Xavier Martinez (one) also scored. Sierra Christian followed that up with a 68-64 victory over visiting Bradshaw Christian on Friday. Sierra Christian's girls made the playoffs as well but they were defeated in the first round by No. 1 Bradshaw Christian 75-16 on Feb. 19. Megan Wessale led the Bears with eight points while Amanda Monnier (four points), Ashley White (two) and Valerie Kraemer (two) also scored.
