A second place finish at Big 8 conference tournament No. 9 was good enough to push the Sierra College men’s golf team back on top of the overall conference standings. The Wolverines entered the contest at Ripon’s Spring Creek Country Club trailing Santa Rosa by two points, but Santa Rosa’s fifth place result in this tourney now gives Sierra a four-point advantage. Co-medalists Stephen Edman and Kevin Lucas of Sierra shot two-under-par 70 on the 6,461-yard par 72 course, and the Wolverines got strong rounds of golf from A.J. Hasegawa (75) and Kyle Chatelain (76) to record a team score of 373, just one stroke behind Delta. The surprisingly strong play of Modesto (385) and Butte (387) pushed Santa Rosa’s 388 to fifth place as Sierra caught a break in the league standings. Sierra travels Tuesday to Silverado Country Club in Napa for Big 8 Conference Tournament No. 10.
