Sierra Elementary to become IB school

Education brief

Sierra Elementary School recently entered its next step to becoming a fully accredited International Baccalaureate candidate school. The Primary Years Programme is geared toward students ages 3 to 12 and is one of three programs offered by the International Baccalaureate Organization. “Because the IB program is inquiry-based, our students have the opportunity to delve deeper into the curriculum with much more complexity,” Sierra Elementary Principal Karen Huffines said. “The IB program challenges children to ask big questions and hone their research skills as they work collaboratively on their inquiries.” Sierra started to become an IB school in 2006 and became a candidate school in 2007, and Sierra teachers have received training on the principles and requirements of the IB program.
