Paul Martin’s American Bistro in Roseville was the site for the chartering of the newly- formed Soroptimist International of South Placer held March 19. Eighteen women from Rocklin, Roseville, Antelope and Granite Bay were inducted into the organization, whose mission is to improve the lives of women and girls. The name, Soroptimist, is a combination of the Latin words “sister” and “best,” which put together means “the best for sisters,” referring to women in general. The afternoon included a silent auction, lunch and chartering ceremony. Almost $1,000 was raised from the auction, which will be used for funding the club’s annual Women’s Opportunity Award, an educational grant that awards local women in need with funds to be used for their education. Among the club’s members, Jo Ann Lewandowski was inducted as president, Marianne Coombes as secretary and Jaylene Sheehan as treasurer. In addition, Trina Laird is the club’s membership director, Tracy Duncan will handle the club’s fundraising and Susan Belknap is public relations director for the organization. Soroptimist International of South Placer meets at 6 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month at RC Willey in Rocklin. For more information, visit www.soroptimistsnr.org.
