Sierra College Dean of Liberal Arts Debra Sutphen has been selected to serve as Interim Vice President of Instruction. Sutphen will fill the position upon the departure of Rachel Rosenthal, who will become President of Folsom Lake College in July. Sutphen began her career at Sierra College in 1999 when she was hired as Professor of History, earning tenure in 2003. During her teaching career at Sierra she served on the college?s award-winning Standing Guard Project as project co-historian and established the college?s successful Honors Program. Sutphen moved into the college?s educational administration in spring 2005 when she became Associate Dean of Sierra?s Liberal Arts division. In 2006, she was promoted to her current position as Dean of Liberal Arts. ?Deb will be an outstanding Vice President of Instruction,? said Sierra College Superintendent/President Willy Duncan, ?She comes to this position with the skills and experience needed to successfully lead. Sutphen holds a Ph.D. in U.S. and Public History from Washington State University, Pullman (1997) and earned Bachelor?s (1988) and Master?s (1991) degrees in History from Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff. A native Arizonan, Sutphen spent 30 years in Flagstaff before moving to Washington State in 1991 to finish her schooling. She settled in Rocklin in 1999.
