Rocklin musicians Laura Didier and Jim Martinez will present “Sweethearts and Steinway: Love Songs from the American Songbook” at 1 and 6 p.m. Tuesday at Sherman Clay Pianos, 771 Pleasant Grove Blvd. in Roseville. The jazz concert will feature some of the most beloved songs of the Great American Songbook, including those of many of the songwriters who shaped America’s popular music scene. Didier, 40, has been performing with the Jim Martinez Trio since 2007. Before joining the trio, Didier performed at major jazz festivals in California, Idaho and Canada, including the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. She said she waited until her children were older and her husband had retired from the U.S. Air Force before pursuing a music career. “I am what I want to be when I grow up,” she said. A classically-trained pianist, Martinez, 46, began studying classic piano at age 4 and joined jazz band in high school. After graduation from college, Martinez started a music software business. When he sold the business, Martinez decided to become a full-time musician. “This was my calling — music,” he said. “I do it because that is where my heart is.” Over the years, Martinez has performed or recorded with noted musicians like Lionel Hampton, the Stan Kenton Band, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra and Ed Thigpen, the first drummer for the Oscar Peterson Trio. He has worked as pianist and musical director for Joan Rivers and Bob Newhart. A resident of Rocklin since 1997, Martinez was recently selected for membership in the International Artist Roster of Steinway & Sons. The Jim Martinez Trio, featuring Didier, has been performing “A Tribute to the Music of Doris Day” to retirement communities and performing art centers throughout the U.S. for several years. Their tribute is the only one endorsed by Day. Cost for Tuesday’s concerts is $15 for the concert only. A $25 ticket-holder will also be served chocolate and wine.
