Tebow’s mom to speak in Roseville
NFL quarterback Tim Tebow’s mother will be the featured speaker Nov. 9 at the Team for Life fundraiser for Rocklin’s New Life Pregnancy Center.
Pam Tebow, who lives in Florida, travels the country sharing the story of her health struggles while pregnant with the child who would grow up to be a Heisman Trophy winner who now plays for the New York Jets.
“She had medical issues during her pregnancy … and her doctors were advising her to abort Tim and she felt very strongly that she and her husband were not going to abort him,” said Kathy Peterson, development director for New Life.
The center’s executive director, Barbara Schauer, said Tebow fits in perfectly for the fundraiser for the nonprofit, nondenominational Christian center that provides support services for women going through unplanned pregnancies, with the goal of clients not having abortions.
“She’s just going to share why she made that choice and the fact that we don’t know whose life we’re affecting,” when it comes to abortion decisions, Peterson said. “Every life is important.”
New Life Pregnancy Center has been open in Rocklin since 2006 and began in Auburn in 2000. Free services offered include pregnancy tests, referrals for free STD testing, post-abortion counseling , parenting programs, men’s mentoring and limited ultrasound referral. The center also operates a “pregnancy center on wheels,” an RV office where clients can get pregnancy tests, doctor referrals and insurance and adoption information.
All services are free and confidential, Peterson emphasized. Schauer added that while New Life is a Christian organization, its services are for all dealing with unplanned pregnancies. Located across from Sierra College, the center saw about 450 patients last year. In addition to the mobile office and Rocklin Road site, which is only open 24 hours a week, the all-volunteer crew is present at Sierra College throughout the year to provide information to students and faculty.
“As far as our clients, we’ve had some who have been very abortion-minded,” Schauer said. “One gal in particular, we had sent her over for an ultrasound, and she saw the baby and said, ‘Wow, this baby has changed my life. There’s no way I could abort it.’”
Tebow will speak for 45 minutes at the Nov. 9 fundraiser, followed by a Q&A with the audience and photo opportunities. She’ll also take a tour of the pregnancy resource center during her visit.
“She is just the neatest gal,” Peterson said, “just a real down-to-earth person and we’re so excited about having her.”
The evening will include a hearty soup, salad and dessert from Randy Peters Catering. Dress is casual.
Schauer said she’s grateful that Tebow is able to come to the event, as she is such a strong pro-life advocate to whom people can easily relate.
“He’s being used in so many people’s lives in humanitarian ways,” Schauer said of Tim Tebow. “And of course his chance to be able to be an effective person out there shows that God definitely has plans for that little one that was created.”
