Rocklin High’s varsity girls tennis team improved to 3-1 in Sierra Foothill League play with two wins last week. The Thunder downed Roseville 8-1 and Oakmont 7-2 with quick victories turned in by Rocklin’s singles’ players at the No. 4 (Amanda Bruns), No. 5 (Stefanie Studen) and No. 6 (Melinda Marion) spots. “Our singles girls are really playing smart tennis with the ability to control the ball, but (they) add pace if necessary,” Rocklin coach Dale Eckenburg said. “Amanda has really worked to add the pace while Melinda has used her footwork to get better.” Rocklin continued to improve in doubles as well as Tanya Sukkari and Meena Sandhu swept both matches after slow starts. Moving up the doubles’ ladder is sophomore Becca Kinsey (4-2 on the season). “Becca has really started to show the intensity she displays on the basketball court,” Eckenburg said. “I keep telling her we are playing full-court trapping defense on the tennis court, go get the ball and make it hurt when you hit it.” Rocklin will visit a tough Del Oro squad at 3:30 p.m. today in a battle for second place in the SFL.
