Rocklin High’s varsity volleyball squad was eliminated in the first round of CIF NorCal Championship play last week. The Thunder, competing in Division II, played at Petaluma and lost 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13. Petaluma was then eliminated in the second round when it lost to undefeated Archbishop Mitty, the top ranked team in the country. Mitty won the NorCal title on Tuesday night. “The game was over and we all looked at each other and this was a good game and we played well,” said Rocklin coach Dave Muscarella about the match against Petaluma on Nov. 24. “You lose a section championship (to St. Francis) and this was the first time all year that we lost back-to-back (matches). But we played a great game (against Petaluma) and the kids bounced back after a poor performance in the section championship. The real Rocklin volleyball team showed up that night.” St. Francis beat Rocklin in three games in the DII section finals at UC Davis on Nov. 19. Rocklin (31-9) is a young team that should be very strong next year. “We are pleased with what we have returning – two sophomores and five juniors returning and with section championship and NorCal experience,” Muscarella said. Thunder junior libero Lauren Orozco was the MVP of the Sierra Foothill League this season while seniors Morgan Smith and Corissa Santos and sophomore Katelyn Ivy were named first-team all SFL. Rocklin senior Clarissa Prewitt, junior Olivia Lane and sophomore Cailyn Prewitt earned an honorable mention.
