Thunder top Christian Brothers 1-0, advance to finals in girls soccer

Rocklin High’s varsity girls soccer team beat Christian Brothers 1-0 on Wednesday night in Folsom in a Sac-Joaquin Section, semifinal match for Division II. The Thunder (12-4-6 overall), who beat McClatchy 2-0 in the first round last week, will face Sierra Foothill League rival Roseville in Saturday’s section final at Folsom High. The match is set for 4 p.m. Roseville (14-3-4 overall) advanced to Saturday’s championship match by beating Granite Bay 3-0 on Wednesday night. Granite Bay went 10-9-4 this season. Roseville won the SFL this season while Rocklin was the No. 2 seed and Granite Bay was the No. 3 seed. Rocklin and Roseville played twice in league play with the Tigers topping the Thunder 3-1 the first time and the teams tying 2-2 in the second half. Christian Brothers (15-6-3 overall) was the top seed from the Sierra Valley Conference. Rocklin’s Michelle Tran scored for the Thunder on Wednesday night midway through the first half. Rachel Spaulding set up the goal with a corner kick that was bobbled by the Christian Brothers’ goalie. Rocklin had more scoring chances throughout the match but Christian Brothers turned up the pressure in the second half. Rocklin kept Christian Brothers’ scoring chances to a minimum in the second half and goalie Melanie Bertrand was solid when the Falcons did get by the defense.
