Two Rocklin wrestlers still in contention
By: Cecil Conley, Sports Editor
Two Rocklin High School wrestlers survived the first day of the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters tournament and will compete today for bids to the state championships. Senior Joey Ramos advanced to the quarterfinals at 215 pounds, but his shot at a section title came to an end when he was pinned by Ripon's Travis Smith. Junior Shane Keefe lost his first match at 140 pounds, but he went 3-0 in the consolation bracket to earn a second day at the Masters meet. Keefe needs to win two matches to earn a trip to the state meet. Rocklin heavyweight Nic Cooper lost his first match, won his next two and was eliminated with a 1-0 loss to Ponderosa's Riley Nooner. First-year coach Torrean Tyus also has sophomore Olivia Seppinni competing in the girls state championships at Lemoore High. Seppinni was 3-0 at 125 pounds on the first day. Whitney sent two wrestlers to the Masters meet and neither survived the first day. Senior Julio Ceron won his first match at 215, then lost 3-2 to Vacaville sophomore Chris Lai. A 7-0 victory over Armijo's Geoffrey Shaw left Ceron in need of one win to survive the day. It never came. Ceron lost 8-6 in overtime to Buhach Colony's Luis Borjorquez. Whitney senior Justin Martinez lost his first two matches at 119 pounds.
