Two rodeos remain in District 3 regular season schedule
Queen pageant Friday, 5:30 pm
The rodeo next weekend is the next of only two remaining events for the California High School Rodeo Association District 3 regular season. It marks the last of the junior events and sets the stage for the senior’s finale April 28-29.
The Thundering Three will also hold its pageant to select District 3’s queen for 2012-13. The pageant will be held Friday, April 13, 5:30 p.m. at the Lincoln Rodeo Grounds.
After the close of April’s action the leaders of District three will then prepare for the California State Rodeo in Bishop on a date to be announced. From there the top performers will head for Gillette, Wyo. for nationals.
Riding high for Senior All Around for girls is Cheyanne Carpenter. She leads Katie Rice by 34 ½ total points in the competition.
The top cowboy is Clayton Brum. Brum is just a sophomore but has a better than 136-point lead over Jordan Sparrowk. Sparrowk is a solid performer in his own right scoring in just two events.
Following are the Seniors results as of March 10-11.
GIRLS
Pole Bending – Alix Carpenter holds a 42-point lead over Faith Steward.
Stewart is going to need some help from the rest of the pack to overtake Carpenter. Stewart could score 60 points over the next two events, but Carpenter would only have to total 18. Carpenter has averaged 22 points an outing so far.
Barrel Racing – This contest could come down to the wire. Rachel Bertram holds a one-point lead over Angelina Carrion, and only 10 points separates the top four riders.
Hot on their hooves will be Cierra McClure (113) and Jennifer Oakham (110).
Breakaway Roping – Katie Rice has a 43 ½ point lead on Madison Horton. Horton, too, would need some help from the rest of the field.
Goat Tying – Rice also has a solid hold on first in this event by nearly 50 points. Current All Around leader Cheyanne Carpenter trails by almost 60 and is in fourth place.
Rice has to make up 35 points to catch Carpenter in the All Around.
Cutting – Cheyanne Carpenter holds a 3 ½ point edge over Taylor Biglow, and is only nine ahead of Rice.
This could prove a real doggie fight in the final cowgirl roundup.
BOYS
Bareback Bronc – Colton Onyette is riding away with this one since he’s the only one in it; hats off to this cowboy.
Saddle Bronc – This is where Onyette could have closed the gap on All Around leader Clayton Brum, but it’s not going to happen. Brum sits at 70 points and Onyette is yet to score.
Bull Riding – Cinch up for this one because there are three riders within 11 points of each other.
Colby Demo scored 20 points in the last rodeo to take a 75-68 lead over Tyler Stueve. Stueve hasn’t scored since November; up to that point he had been averaging more than 22 points per ride.
In the wings is Robert Braiser with 64 points; Braiser was on a roll until getting shut out in his last two events.
Steer Wrestling – Challenge of Champions winner Jaed Hare could take off the next two rodeos and still win overall by 36. There isn’t a steer without fear when Hare is around.
Tie Down Roping – Seth Bowling fell to nine points in his last event and opened the door for Brum to pull within five of the lead. Brum scored a 30 last month.
C.J. Beauregard has been perhaps the most consistent in the event and stands at 132, just 10 points behind Bowling.
Look for some fast ridin’ and ropin’ as these three take it to the wire.
Cutting – Sparrowk hasn’t scored less than 23 ½ points in this event and holds a 28-point edge on Chase Bisby. Bisby has put up some solid numbers, but Sparrowk has three perfect scores to his credit and could be due for another before the chase is over.
Brum trails by 50 ½ and would need some serious help to close the gap.
TEAM
Roping Header – Sparrowk jumped out to a 126-113 lead over Cheyanne Carpenter after scoring a 29 in his last outing. Carpenter needs a couple of good showings to capture this one.
Brum stands at 106 after two blank checks in his last couple of events. However, his hold on third is padded by 21 points.
Roping Heeler – Bowling also sits at 126 with Riley Jackson holding at 113.
Tyler Gibbs, in third, was trying to climb the ladder but is 33 back after averaging less than 10 points in his last four events. Luke Pfister trails Gibbs by eight.
