The members of the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators selected John Volek, dean/director of athletics at Sierra College, to serve as president for the alliance for 2010-11. In 2003, Volek was offered and accepted the position as Dean of Physical Education and Athletics at Sierra College. Through his leadership the Wolverines athletic teams have achieved national recognition. The first year that he undertook his role as dean, the California Community College Commission on Athletics and National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators named Sierra College first in the nation for overall athletic excellence. Since then, Sierra College Athletics has ranked in the top four positions. Volek also is an alumnus of Sierra College, where he also left his mark. In the1966 his football team under the leadership of Coach ‘Buzz’ Nostrum, won the Golden Valley Conference Championship for Sierra College. In 2006 Volek and his teammates were inducted into the Wolverine Athletic Association Hall of Fame to commemorate the win. “Sierra is proud that one of our own has been selected to lead this important organization. They could not have selected a better leader. We congratulate him and wish him well,” said Leo Chavez, president of Sierra College.
