Warriors off to a 6-2 start on the season

William Jessup University softball had an excellent start to the season sweeping its first series and taking four of six games at the Simpson University Invitational. At Simpson University _ Saturday was a big day for the red-white-and blue clad club as they won all three of their match ups. The Warriors had to go up against National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics defending champion Oregon Tech University in their final game. The Hustlin’ Owls were also ranked No. 1 coming into the tournament. However, a strong defense and good offense allowed WJU to top OUT 4-1. To get into that game William Jessup defeated Northwest Christian University 8-0, and earlier slipped by Eastern Oregon University 5-4. On Friday, the Warriors closed out the day by getting shut out by College of Idaho, 6-0. They also lost their first game that day 12-2 to Corbin University, but came back for a 5-1 win over Concordia University-Portland. Biola University _ William Jessup started it season last week with a two-game sweep of the Eagles, 8-0 and 8-2. Freshman Emily Buhrkuhl threw a one-hit shutout in her pitching debut with the Warriors. Junior Mallory Blodget from Folsom led WJU in their first eight games with a .370 batting average that included six runs batted in and a home run. Breihanna Castilleja, also a junior, drove in two runs with a solid .500 BA performance at the plate. The Warriors will head to Southern California next weekend to take on Hope International University, No. 18 Concordia University-Irvine, and Vanguard University.
