-A +A
The recently-approved Western Sierra Collegiate Academy, grades seven through 12 charter school in Rocklin, announced Steven Carney as principal. Carney has been hired as the founding principal and new Director of Education for WSCA. The announcement by the board of directors at the Rocklin Academy board meeting last month solidifies the activities surrounding the opening of the new college-prep middle and high school for the 2009-10 school year. Carney has been extensively involved in the formation of WSCA from his three years as a board member for Rocklin Academy and through his professional expertise in helping to lead the board through the approval process of the academy’s charter. “Steven Carney brings outstanding expertise in his new role,” said Executive Director Dr. David Patterson. “He is a nationally-recognized curriculum and instruction expert and leadership coach. We feel very fortunate to have him develop Western Sierra Collegiate Academy into an outstanding public school choice in our community.” Carney’s experience includes being a classroom teacher, school administrator and a curriculum instruction and assessment leader. Previously, he served as a County Office of Education Coordinator/Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Staff Development for two counties, providing support, staff development and leadership to more than 60 school districts. In addition to curriculum and leadership coaching, he is a staff developer, presenter and facilitator, assisting underperforming and high performing schools in all areas of continuous improvement and building effective teaching and learning environments. Carney is currently the president of the California Staff Development council and has been selected as a National School Alliance coach. WSCA is a college preparatory tuition-free public charter school, currently en-rolling grades seven through nine. Western Sierra is located at 6900 Destiny Drive in Rocklin.
