Whitney High varsity football coach Mike Gimenez should have his starting quarterback and starting running back on the field on Friday night against Bear River. Sophomore quarterback Jake Rodrigues (leg injury) and junior Shawn Azam (shoulder injury) missed Friday night’s 35-7 victory at Colfax. “It is day-to-day and we plan on having them ready to play on Friday,” said Gimenez about both players on Tuesday. Whitney (3-2 overall, 1-1 in the Pioneer Valley League) will host Bear River at 7:30 p.m. in a league game. The Wildcats haven’t lost at home since 2006. Bear River is 3-2 overall but the Bruins lost their only PVL contest to Colfax (31-30) on Oct. 5. The Bruins beat Lindhurst 32-0 on Friday after beating Calaveras (9-0) and Woodcreek (35-34) earlier in the season. Bear River’s other loss came against Capital Christian (29-14). Bear River has scored at least 30 points in each of its last three games and the Bruins feature two talented, senior running backs. Johnny Jewett has rushed 65 times for 428 yards (6.59 yards per carry) and six touchdowns while Cole White has rushed 95 times for 460 yards (4.84 per carry) and five touchdowns.
