The accomplishments of the Whitney High School football team landed 13 of its players on the Capital Athletic League All-League awards, including Offensive Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year. For the second year in a row, Wildcat’s quarterback Jake Rodrigues was named the CAL’s No. 1 player on offense. Also, Mike Gimenez was named the league’s Coach of the Year award after leading his club to a 5-0 record in just the ‘Cats second year in the conference. Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick was named Defensive Linemen, along with Rio Americano’s Bobby Keenan. Making the first team were Connor Graves (running back), Thaddeus Cox and Cody Johnsrud (linemen), Ian Bamsey (lineman, defense), JT Hirsch and Sean O’Brien (linebackers), and Jordan Powell and Trever Sitch (defensive backs). Making the second team roster were defensive lineman Aaron Froidevaux, and linebacker Tanner Hughes. The Wildcats finished 9-2 on the season, and were champions of the CAL. Coach Gimenez has compiled a record of 47-13, following the 2-8 season the Wildcats had their first year of varsity playing with juniors and sophomores. The club was Division IV Sac-Joaquin Section champions in 2008, after a perfect 13-0 season. The team was then playing in the Pioneer Valley League, but was moved to the CAL last year. In his junior/senior seasons, ‘Cats’ quarterback Rodrigues completed 225 passes in 418 attempts for a total of 3,979 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He’s rushed for 1,934 yards on 328 carries, and scored 37 TDs. He is headed for Oregon next year to play for the Ducks. In two years, tight end/defensive end Cope-Fitzpatrick totaled 49 tackles, three sacks, three passes batted down, and a blocked punt. On offense, he’s pulled in 55 passes for 732 yards and 11 TDs. The 6-foot, 5-inch No. 12 will lend his talents to the Under Armor All America game coming up in January, and plans to play for the Trojans of Southern California after graduation.
