Whitney basketball improves as league play continues

Both teams defeat Mira Loma

BOYS BASKETBALL After their most recent outing, things are looking up for the Whitney High varsity boys basketball team. Coming out with a 65-32 win against the Mira Loma Marauders, the team had secured their second win of league play. The Wildcats took an overwhelming 21-2 lead in the first quarter and then cruised into halftime with a 32-12 bulge. After the half, Whitney stayed strong throughout the rest of the game. They topped Mira Loma in both the third and fourth quarters to seal the victory. The ‘Cats currently have a 2-4 record in Capital Athletic League play. Whitney hits the road for three games before wrapping up the season against league leader Antelope at home, Feb. 17. GIRLS BASKETBALL Like the boys team, the Lady Wildcats also defeated Mira Loma, but fell short against Rio Americano. After a big win over the Marauders, Whitney couldn’t keep pace with host Rio Americano, Tuesday. The ‘Cats kept the game close in the first two quarters trailing by just six; however, the Raiders blew things open in the second half to come away with a 53-34 triumph. Rio Americano’s Jaime Dixon had 18 points in the contest. Mira Loma _ Whitney breezed past the Marauders 57-36 last Tuesday. Senior Alex Rodriguez turned in a career night. She matched Mira Loma’s output by pouring in 36 points of her own. Rodriguez also had 16 rebounds. The Wildcats entertain Capital Athletic League leader El Camino tonight and host Cordova Tuesday.
