Whitney boys improve to 15-0 in CAL competition

Team sets school record and personal records

The Whitney High School track and field team had its third of three Capital Athletic League meets on April 25 at Cordova High School. ?A bit wet and rainy for part of the meet but that is the nice part about all weather tracks. We can run in most any condition,? said Whitney head coach Mark Snow. Snow said the varsity boys squad is continuing to dominate the CAL. ?They are now 15-0 in league and undefeated over the last two years,? he said. The Wildcats won the meet (153). Antelope was second (112), Cordova finished third (87) and Rio Americano (74) ended up fourth. Ian Bamsey set a new school record in the 400-meters for Whitney. The senior stepped it off in 51.68 seconds for third place less than a second behind the winning time. Joey Camarda won the high jump clearing 5 feet 10 inches. Garret Gerberding won the pole vault at 12-6. Ryan Hodgens (9:57.35) and Jacob Zufelt (9:57.54) placed first and second in the 2-mile race. Nate Wellington set a new personal best (4:36) in the 1600-meters. Trever Sitch took both hurdle events setting a personal best in each. He did the 110m highs in 15.32 and then won the 300m lows in 39.87 Sitch, Alex Ewing and Evan Ja all placed in the top four in the long jump competition. Sitch was second with a leap of 20-6 and Ewing fourth hitting 20 feet on the nose. Ja nearly broke the 20-foot barrier going 19-11. The varsity girls squad is in second-place in the CAL while Antelope holds down first. The Wildcats are 11-4. Antelope (180.5) won the meet, Cordova (86) was second and Whitney (76.5) finished third. Shea Barker led the Wildcats with two victories in the hurdles. The junior high stepped the 100m highs (33?) in 16.70 and took the lows (30?) in 49.35. Taylor Aidnik finished second in the 400m (1:02.00) and was fourth in the 200m (27.18). Jenica Dodge?s second-place finish (3:31) in the 800-meter race was a personal record. Alana Viera also ran a personal best in the 100m race breaking the plane in 13.59. Barker was fourth running the distance in 3.18. Stephanie Diettinger won the pole vault at 9-6. The 4x400 team of and Aidnik, Kiana Brown and Shelby Esparza finished third in a time of 4:26.15 (fourth runner not listed). The JV boys team (9-6) stands at third in the CAL. Sprinters David Bicking and Kyle McCray, distance runners Eric Leverenz, Nicholas Pulido, and Zack Tyler, pole-vaulter Joe Howard and jumpers Zuhair Mirza and Justin Read, led the Wildcats. Whitney has its SACTOWN RACES frosh/soph meet at Whitney on Saturday. ?We are in our seventh year and we host 25-plus teams every year with high-end caliber teams and athletes coming to our school,? Snow said. CAL Trials and Finals are at Whitney High School on May 9 and 11. Meet of Champions The Whitney track and field team competed at the Meet of Champions, Hughes Stadium, Sacramento City College Saturday. Camarda set a school record in the 100m (11.01) to finish third. Hemant Thomas also had a personal best crossing the line in 11.18 seconds. Bamsey broke his own record in the 200m turning in a time of 22.49, less than a second behind the winning time. In the girls 1600m and 3200m, Dodge ran 5:30.45 and 11:33.50 respectively. She was second in her division in the 3200m less than a second behind the winner. Barker had her second best performance in the 100m highs coming in at 16.05. Zufelt also set a school record in the 800m with a time of 1:58.61 and Wellington timed 9:57.14 in the 3200m to again break the 10-minute mark. Not to be outdone, Hodgens ran the 3200m in 9:32.76 for fifth place overall, a new school record and a personal best. Sitch broke the 15-second barrier clocking in at 14.91 in the 110 high hurdles. He then chalked up a new school record in the 300m lows pumping out a 39.66. The boys 4x100 relay team (Joe Atwood, Bamsey, Thomas and Camarda) turned in their fastest time of the year at 43.02 for second in their grouping. It was the second fastest time on school record. The girls team of Viera, Barker, Haley Nyal and Aidnik did the 4x100 in 51.87 and feel they are peaking at right time.
