A foot injury forced Jake Rodrigues to the sideline in the second half Friday night. After all the Whitney High School quarterback did in the first half, he deserved a break. Rodrigues threw three touchdown passes and ran for two scores in the first 24 minutes to lead the Wildcats to a 55-14 victory over Mira Loma in their Capital Athletic League debut. “You only have five league games, so it’s important to get off on the right foot,” Whitney head coach Mike Gimenez said after his team evened its record at 3-3. Rodrigues wasted no time in putting the Wildcats ahead. He broke loose for a 74-yard touchdown on the third play on scrimmage. He also had a 7-yard scoring run in the first half. His touchdown passes went to Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick, Christian Daniels and Corey Palin. Cope-Fitzpatrick also caught a touchdown pass from Amit Sekhon after Sekhon replaced Rodrigues in the second half. The Wildcats set a season low for points allowed. Whitney entered the league opener having yielded an average of 41 points per game. Whitney’s junior varsity team made it a sweep with a 48-6 victory.
