Whitney football team to host Woodland on Friday
By: Staff Report
Whitney High’s varsity football team will try to improve to 2-0 when it hosts Woodland at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Wildcats didn’t play last week after topping visiting Fernley of Nevada 28-14 in the season opener on Sept. 4. Woodland opened its season Friday against visiting Lincoln and lost 19-7. Lin-coln, which finished 1-9 a year ago, is a member of the Pioneer Valley League with Whitney. The Wildcats beat Woodland 22-12 last year as Whitney coach Mike Gimenez took on his alma mater. Gimenez played quarterback at Woodland High before graduating in 1986. He also was the varsity head coach of the Wolves for 11 years before starting the Whitney program in 2005. Whitney finished 13-0 last season and hasn’t lost a home game since 2006, when it competed at the varsity level but without seniors.
