With a 2-0 win over visiting Lincoln, the Whitney High varsity soccer team secured a victory after jumping ahead early and clamping down defensively last Wednesday.

Aliyah Utush got involved on both scores of the afternon, one on an assist and the other by her own efforts.

After only one shot on goal for the first 12 minutes by either team, Utush was able to hug the sideline and then penetrate Lincoln’s perimeter. With a pass directly in front of Lincoln’s goalkeeper, Utush found Jessica Randhawa who scored the go-ahead goal in the 13th minute.

In the 25th minute, Utush broke away from a Lincoln defender around midfield. With only the goalkeeper between her and the goal, Utush found the net for the final score of the match.

From that point on, the Wildcats’ defense played the largest role in maintaining the lead.

Two minutes after Utush’s goal, Lincoln attempted their first shot on Whitney goalkeeper Molly McConnell without success. It was the Zebras’ only one of the half.

For the first 20 minutes of the second half, Whitney appeared it would extend its lead finding breaks in Lincoln’s defense. However, the Wildcats were unable to attempt a shot.

Just like Whitney, Lincoln clamped down its defense allowing only three shots in the second half.

The final 20 minutes saw play go from Lincoln’s goal to Whitney’s. Lincoln attempted a shot at the 21-minute mark but otherwise couldn’t penetrate the Wildcats’ defense.

“In the first half, it was a good game. We executed pretty good,” said Whitney head coach Ana Jones. “But in the second half we were OK, we felt good that we had a lead, so we weren’t trying to score.

“So far, we’re scoring one or two goals a game,” added Jones. “We do need to improve with league coming up.”
