Whitney girls place second at PVL swim finals; boys take third

Whitney High’s varsity girls placed second at the Pioneer Valley League swim championships while Whitney’s varsity boys took third in the meet held at Whitney over the weekend. Colleen Daley, Loree Olson, Stephanie Grover, Courtney Ueltzen, Sam Johnson, Hannah Prigge, Hannah Wallach, Brittany Shine, Nicole Goodrich and Vanessa Ruiz each qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section meet for Whitney’s varsity girls. The section meet will be held May 14-16 at Tokay High in Lodi. Daley placed first in the 50 freestyle, setting a new school record with her time of 24.95 seconds. She also made the all-PVL team by placing first. Olson also made the all-league team by winning the 100 backstroke while setting a school record (1:01.43). Daley and Olson joined teammates Stephanie Grover and Sam Johnson in winning the 400 free relay. Prigge, also a league champion in diving, achieved All-American diver status with her performance at the championships. The section diving championships are today through Saturday at Oakmont. Whitney will send eight varsity boys to sections as Caleb Gardner, Johnny Hamner, Scott Palmer, Joe Gibson, Miles Christensen, Alex Mowry, Will Kellogg and Chandler Sherman each qualified. Palmer finished third in the 50 free with a school-record time of 22.95. Gardner was a league champion in diving.
