Derek Knutty, who graduated from Whitney High in June, has earned a full-ride scholarship to play basketball for St. Michael’s College in Vermont. Knutty had a very successful senior season for the Wildcats, leading the team in points (14.7 per game), rebounds (10.8) and blocks (2.6) while helping the squad reach the third-round of the playoffs. The 6-foot-6 forward will leave for the east coast on Aug. 26. “One of the (St. Michael’s) coaches has a brother for another college and he saw me at a tournament and (told his brother) that I was the guy they were looking for,” Knutty said. “And they told me to send in (basketball) tapes and I did. And they gave me a full ride.” St. Michael’s is a Division II school that plays in the Northeast-10 Conference. The team will open the season with non-league games at Vermont and then at Boston College. “There were a couple of junior colleges and Menlo (College) and also the Air Force Academy,” said Knutty about what other colleges showed an interest in his basketball abilities. “But Air Force wanted me to start next year because I would have to go to prep school for one year first.” Knutty was a three-sport athlete at Whitney, also playing baseball and soccer. ”I automatically dropped (the idea of playing) baseball (wasn’t passionate about it) and I went to a soccer camp at Cal Poly (in July) and didn’t really feel like playing anymore,” Knutty said. Knutty hopes St. Michael’s allows him to snowboard. “Hopefully they will let me snowboard because I’ve heard that they have some great snowboard places up there,” Knutty said. “And I’m looking forward to new experiences.”
