NAPA _ The Whitney High School football team put to rest any notions this season would be a rebuilding year by blowing past Vintage 48-12 last Friday. And, some of the Wildcats’ were nursing injuries and didn’t play. The ‘Cats rolled up nearly 400 total yards with 184 coming through the air and 209 on the ground. Southpaw quarterback Drew Romo had just two passes fall incomplete on his way to 178 yards and one touchdown. “He made a lot of great decisions,” said Whitney head coach Michael Gimenez as to Romo’s leadership. The Romo family recently moved from Merced to Rocklin. Pulling in Romo’s TD aerial was Cody Moffitt. The senior wide receiver had three catches for 46 yards. Also stepping up big on the receiving end was junior tight end Jason Brunet who burned the Crushers’ secondary for 106 yards on two catches – one for 77 yards. No less than eight backs carried the freight for Whitney. Kyle McCray had nine touches for 46 yards and Zuhair Mirza matched that on eight carries. Senior Sutter Choisser was the workhorse with 75 total yards on six totes and two touchdowns. Jordan Powell also rushed for a TD. Gimenez said the club’s line play was solid, but the brightest spot came from special teams. “Our special teams were awesome,” Gimenez said. “Our special teams are absolutely great, especially this early in the year.” The ‘Cats recovered an onside kick, blocked a punt, and Kris Corpus took a Vintage kickoff back 79 yards for six. Jordan Traynor and Ryan O’Malley kicked three extra points apiece and Traynor just missed a 33-yard field goal attempt. Gimenez said the field goal unit performed flawlessly and that Traynor’s kick only missed by a couple of feet. “He’ll make it next time,” Gimenez said. The defense had to deal with the Crushers’ option offense, which often demands a lot of solo tackles. Gimenez said the team pursuit was awesome and gave up only two scores. He said the club will continue to sharpen fundamentals this week in practice. Free safety Josey Weber had nine tackles and McCray, Francis Kim, and Matt Guerrero added five each. The Wildcats will host Oakmont this Friday, winners over Foothill 45-35 last week.
