A 75-yard touchdown run by Shawn Azam with 3:36 to play was enough for Whitney High School to hold off Vanden 39-36 on Friday night in the Wildcats’ home opener. The Vikings responded after Azam’s dash with a 65-yard drive that Ben Scott capped by tossing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Cody Holbein. The Vikings then tried an onside kick, but the Wildcats recovered it. This was the first time this season that the Wildcats held an opponent to fewer than 40 points. Whitney beat Concord 42-40 on Sept. 4 and lost 48-19 to Rocklin last Friday. Whitney wide receiver Corey Palin had six receptions for 175 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown. The Vikings won the junior varsity game 40-8.
