Whitney JV notches first win against Mira Loma

After five-straight losses, the Whitney junior-varsity Wildcats defeated Capital Athletic League opponent Mira Loma, 55-6. Coming into Friday’s game, Whitney had scored five offensive touchdowns this season. Against the visitors, a combination of great special teams play and a solid rushing attack led to five scores in the first half. The ‘Cats would score seven touchdowns in all. The tone was set by special teams. With the Matadors punting on the first sequence, Kyle Carr broke through and blocked the kick and Jory Weber recovered. Two plays later, JT Deroun ran 10 yards for the first TD. On the next sequence, Daniel Jones returned another Mira Loma punt for a 73-yard touchdown. Whitney’s Joe Roberts rush for 69 yards and three touchdowns to lead the rushing attack. “It was teamwork,” said Roberts. “We did what we had to do.” The Wildcats’ defense didn’t let up until the final three minutes of the game when Mira Loma scored. The Matadors offense totaled 132 yards, all on their side of the field. “They needed this one for their morale more than anything,” said Whitney JV head coach Fred Locsin. “This is their homecoming.” The boys in maroon will now go on the road to play Rio Americano. The Raiders are coming off a 48-0 loss to Cordova and will look to right the ship against Whitney. Locsin would like to repeat last year’s performance of a 42-0 shutout when they finished CAL play with a spotless record.
