Whitney High’s varsity football team will open the Pioneer Valley League season at 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln on Friday. The Wildcats closed the non-league season with Friday night’s 24-7 loss at Oakdale. Whitney (2-1) opened the season with wins over visiting Fernley of Nevada (28-14) and visiting Woodland (29-7). Friday’s loss was Whitney’s first since it was defeated by Oakdale in the 2007 Sac-Joaquin Section, Division IV title game. The Wildcats went 13-0 and beat Placer in the DIV title game last season. Whitney coach Mike Gimenez was pleased with Monday’s practice. “Our kids have responded by getting back to practice and preparing and working harder than ever,” he said. “It is exactly how we wanted them to respond.” Lincoln, which went 1-9 last year, is 3-0 this season. Lincoln opened the season with road victories over Woodland (19-7) and Wheatland (28-21). The Zebras beat visiting Brookside Christian 55-20 on Friday night. The Wildcats beat the Zebras 49-13 a year ago. “The senior and junior class at Lincoln has won at the lower levels and we knew they were going to have success when they were a varsity team,” Gimenez said. “They are big and physical. They have a real good team.”
