Whitney soccer repeats in Cal Spring Classic
Whitney High’s girls soccer team picked up three wins and a tie to emerge undefeated in the Cal Spring Classic 2013 held in Woodland last month.
Whitney closed out the tournament with a 1-0 win over Napa. Marissa Johansson scored the match’s only goal as the Wildcats defense dominated the Indians. Whitney took five shots on goal with two being set up on assists by Mikayla English and Ashley Hunter.
Terra Linda fell 5-1 as the maroon-and-gold continued its tournament momentum. Brittney Neumann and Mallory Erl both scored twice and Hunter added a goal as well. Goalkeeper Molly McConnell got a terrific workout making 15 saves in the match.
Rodriguez was the only club to slow down the Wildcats holding Whitney to a scoreless tie. McConnell was the player of the game for the ‘Cats making three saves.
Vacaville was the first to fall to Whitney in the Spring Classic, victims of a 1-0 defeat. Hunter scored the Wildcats’ winning goal on an assist by Johansson. McConnell had seven saves.
Whitney has since continued its undefeated season beating Granite Bay and Rocklin. The ‘Cats were tied 1-1 by Bella Vista March 5.
Whitney is 7-0-2 on the young season.
