Whitney softball takes No. 1 seed into playoffs

El Camino made a bid to get a share of the Capital Athletic League softball championship handing Whitney High their only league loss but the Wildcats swept both Rio Americano and Antelope to finish the regular season 9-1 and claim the crown outright. Whitney wrapped up the year 17-9 overall with Monday?s game with Roseville yet to be reported. However, the outcome of that matchup would have no bearing on the postseason. The Wildcats head for the Sacramento Softball Complex for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Playoffs Friday as the Pioneer Valley League?s No. 1 seed. Also opening play at No. 1 are Benicia (25-5) from the Solano County Conference, Bear River (16-6-2) from the Pioneer Valley League and the Tri-County League?s Pioneer (16-3-1). Whitney comes in with a .344 team batting average and a .420 slugging percentage to include 44 doubles. The club has also stolen 66 bases and has .948 fielding percentage with just 30 errors on the season. The Wildcats have eight players hitting over .300: Darian Harris (.455), Cotton (.439), Kaylin Mallory (.395), Sidney Hafey (.385), Mallory Andrada (.360), Kalyi Shaw (.356), Shelby Taylor (.352) and Mello (.314). Coach April Steele has two strong pitchers in ace Taylor Cotton and backup Megan Mello. Cotton has a 2.31 earned run average with 122 strikeouts and just 31 bases on balls. Mello?s ERA is 1.88 and she?s recorded 55 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings. In the playoffs, Whitney will play either No. 2 seed (PVL) Placer (16-3) with a .333/.441 batting/slugging average or Tri-County?s No. 3 seed River Valley (14-7) hitting .331 and slugging .528 as a team. The Falcons have 12 home runs. GOLF Whitney took the No. 2 spot in the Division III Boys Tournament behind Placer. The Hillmen shot 392 to the Wildcats? 405 at Spanos Park in Stockton May 7. Whitney?s Connor Graves carded an 81, Andy Hadley 80, Justin Pena 81, Ryan Speroni 79 and Sky Lewis 84. The Wildcats now move on to the NOrCAl Championships at Butte Creek Country Club in Chico May 21. BASEBALL Whitney lost a hearbreaker 6-5 to River Valley Monday in the opening round of the Division III baseball playoffs.
