In the season opener, the Whitney High softball team had contributions from incoming freshman and established seniors as the Wildcats defeated visiting Del Campo 10-2 last week.

Batting sixth in the lineup, Shelby Miller began her high-school playing career with a 2-for-2 performance. She drove in three runs and scored twice.

The freshman third-baseman’s first at bat came with the bases loaded and two outs. Miller’s first hit and run-batted-in came inches from being a routine out, as the freshman narrowly beat out the throw to first base.

In the fourth inning, Miller added a pair a runs in another two-out situation doubling in Kayli Shaw and Kaylin Mallery.

Batting one spot above Miller was senior Leslie Tulloh. Tulloh came up to bat on a similar bases-loaded situation in the first inning. With a solid swing, Tulloh split the gap to right-center field for a three-run double.

Tulloh’s double gave the Wildcats an early 4-0 lead, which turned out to be enough for pitcher Taylor Cotton. Cotton pitched all seven innings of the game.

Cotton established her presence early, allowing one hit through three innings and recording three strikeouts.

With runners in scoring position, Cotton seemed to be at her best. In such situations, the senior held Del Campo to 1-for-9 and punched out four batters.

Cotton helped her own cause on offense going 2-3 with an RBI single in the fifth inning.

After the game Whitney head coach April Steele commended her team’s victory, backed by an offensive performance of five extra-base hits.

“They were hitting the ball, which was our goal,” said Steele. “We made (a few) little mistakes on defense, but it doesn’t matter when you hit the ball like that.”

Optimistic after her high school debut, Miller showed the confidence of a team with big expectations.

“I think we’re going to do great this year,” said Miller. “We’re going to finish this and win section.”
