Whitney Wildcats roll into the New Year

Lady ‘Cats look for edge; four make football All Metro
The Whitney High varsity girls basketball team isn’t short on talent, but their 4-9 preseason record doesn’t reflect the early optimism. Senior Alex Rodriguez has been on fire scoring 17.5 points a game, and gathering in more than six rebounds a game. Junior point guard Kristin Ladas has kept pace adding more than 11 points per contest, and leads the club in assists. And, junior forward Masirah Holmes has been working hard underneath to give the Wildcats strength on the boards. But, the club is averaging more than 20 turnovers each game, and averaging just 43 points a game. Their opponents have been scoring almost 10 points more than that. It must be noted that the maroon-and-gold have played some tough opponents this preseason, Woodcreek (9-5), and Nevada Union (6-6); the ‘Cats played the Miners twice. And there are no plans to back down wrapping up the preseason against Granite Bay, Davis, and Rocklin. However, tough games are what they’ll need going into Capital Athletic League play. In the early going, the leagues top three, El Camino, Antelope, and Rio Americano had a combined win/loss record of 25-8. Football _ The accolades just keep coming for the 2011 Wildcats with four players landing on the Sacramento Bee’s All Metro Team. Topping that list at no surprise was standout tight end Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick. Look for Cope-Fitzpatrick in the Under Armor All America Game, Jan. 5, featuring some of the country’s finest high school football talent. The game was scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN and ESPNU, game time 7:30 p.m., EST. Quarterback Jake Rodrigues was selected as the second team’s signal caller, and linemen Thaddeus Cox and Greg Holm were given Honorable Mention. Boys Basketball _ The Wildcats are hosting their Winter Classic tournament this week, with the championship game scheduled for Friday night. There was a chance the ‘Cats could end up in a rematch with Del Oro in that title tilt as the Golden Eagles were lined up on the opposite side of the bracket. Del Oro won the earlier clash between the two, 43-29.
