Wildcats’ boys run away with Thunder Invitational

The Whitney High boys track and field team put on a tremendous performance to outdistance a field of 30 teams and win Rocklin High’s annual Thunder Invitational, April 14. Demonstrating a solid team effort, the Wildcats claimed just one gold medal but pulled away from the field to take first place by 19 points. Senior Trever Sitch continued his mastery in the hurdles winning the 300 meter lows in 39.83, nearly a second and a half ahead of second place. He then took second in the 110m highs just .46 seconds behind the winning time. The 4x400m relay team of Ian Bamsey, Koren Vaughn, Blanke Abeln and Sitch claimed second with a time of 3:32.24. The winning time was 3:29.86. Bamsey and Atwood tied for third in the 200m race (22.95) and Atwood and Joey Camarda shared third in the 100m (11.12). Ryan Hodgens earned silver in the 3200m (9:40.61) and Jacob Zufelt was sixth in the 800m (2:00.28). Anthony Sitch was fourth in the 300m lows (41.80). Garret Gerberding cleared 12 feet in the pole vault for seventh place and Trever Sitch broke the 20-foot barrier for sixth in the long jump (20.01.5 feet). GIRLS Sophomore Jenica Dodge continued to climb the ladder in the 1600m with a third-place finish (5:26.04). She then placed sixth in the 3200m (11:48.44). Shea Barker added a fourth for the team in the 100m highs (16.23) and the team of Taylor Aidnik, Barker, Haley Nyal and Marialana Viera placed seventh in the 4x100m relay. Stephanie Diettinger was sixth in the pole vault clearing 9 feet. JV _ Nicholas Pulido was seventh in the 3200 (11.00.44) and Zuhair Mirza went 35-9 in the triple jump for fifth. Justin Read finished sixth just 4 inches behind Mirza. Haley Ellis was sixth (1.04.98) and Kiana Brown seventh (1:05.31) in the 400m and Haley Ellis, Shelby Esparza, Breonah Moore and Brown seventh in the 4x400m relay (4:37.89). Morgan Young tied for fourth in the pole vault (6 feet). ROCKLIN BOYS Ryan Jones took gold in the 800m in a time of 1:57.64. Rocklin’s 4x400m relay team of Alex Devereux, Marvin Gardner, Leandro Praseli and Teddy Flanagan claimed the fifth spot (3:33.14) and the4x100m relay team was seventh (44.92). Conner Besmer earned second in the pole vault (14-6) and Chris VanLiew hurled the discus 153-8 for third place. GIRLS Baylor Hogan was fifth in the 400m (1:01.67) and Liesl Shirhall ran the 200m in 26.33 for seventh. Kyleigh Stout added a seventh finishing the 800m in 2:30.34. Natalie Cartan high stepped the 100m high hurdles for sixth (16.60) and Leah Carter, Elyse Rowen, Shirhall and Stout did the 4x400m relay in 4:10.08 for fourth. Carter cleared the winning height (5-4) in the high jump but finished second. Trenice Campbell was seventh in the triple jump going 31-9.5. JV _ The trio of Erin Greenwood (5:48.68), Autumn Burton (5:48.72) and Sydney Strecker (5:51.25) placed one-two-three in the girls 1600m. Sabrina Wilson earned the No. 4 spot in the 3200m (12:28.63) and Emily McCrary was fifth in the girls 400m (1:03.88). The Thunder 4x100m relay team took second (53.60). Julia Downs went 15-5 ½ for fourth in the long jump and Rachel Towne put the shot 28-5 ½ for seventh. George Miao and Ty Medd claimed gold and silver, respectively, in the boys 3200m in times of 9:46.29 and 10:17.43. Daniel Stauble came in at 10:49.13 for sixth.
