After winning their first two games of the preseason, the sledding got a little tougher when the Whitney High girls basketball team took on teams in the Division II Sierra Foothill League. Hosting Nevada Union, Dec. 3, the Wildcats couldn’t find enough traction in quarters two and four to make up for the lead the Miners built in the first and third periods. Nevada Union put up 20 points in the first quarter, and held Whitney to eight. The maroon-and-gold picked up the pace in the second quarter to pull within six by halftime, but a big letdown in the third stanza put the game out of reach. The visitors outscored the ‘Cats 22-6 in period three to close the door on any chance of a comeback, and cruised to a 66-43 win. Alex Rodriguez led Whitney with 15 points; she was followed closely by teammate Masirah Holmes who put in 14. Molly McConnell added five to the effort. The Wildcats shot 34 percent from the floor, and only 30 percent from the free-throw line. The Miners pulled down 12 more rebounds that the Wildcats, and shot 45 percent from the floor. Nevada Union’s Nicole Lierly had 23 points to lead all scorers. The turnover ratio also went in the Miners favor, 15-26. Woodcreek _ The Timberwolves fell behind early, but fought their way back to take a 70-58 victory, Dec. 2. Placer _ It was a shootout made for basketball fans as Whitney rallied in the fourth quarter to trip up the Hillmen, 63-61, with only one player in reserve, Dec. 1. Placer held a slim one-point lead at intermission, and increased it in the third period outscoring the Wildcats 18-12. However, a determined Whitney team stormed back to score 24 in the final eight minutes for the win. Junior point guard Kristin Ladas had a near-career night raining in 22 points, four from beyond the 3-point arc. Sharpshooter Rodriguez did her share by scoring 20 points and pulling down seven rebounds to assist in pulling off the victory. Holmes scored 10, as all six maroon-and-gold clad players got on the scoreboard. Lodi _ Whitney handed head coach Andy Carter his first varsity win by downing Lodi, 45-25, Nov.29. They did it in spite of scoring only two points in the second quarter. Rodriguez led the club in scoring with 17; Ladas added 13, and McConnell had seven. Rodriguez had two 3-pointers, and Ladas had one. The clubs were pretty even in rebounds and turnovers. Holmes and Rodriguez combined to grab 11 of the ‘Cats 33 boards; Benit Meyer led the club with 10. Whitney was scheduled to compete in the Maria Carrillo Tournament this weekend. The Wildcats were to meet 3-1 Analy in their first tournament game, Thursday.
