Wildcats could run away with CAL

Cross Country team coming on strong

ANGELS CAMP _ The Whitney High School varsity cross-country team competed in the Bret Harte Invitational, Sept. 24. Boys – The boys placed third overall in the Large Schools division out of 28 teams. The Wildcats were led by Ryan Hodgens’ first place finish with a time of 16:44. Jacob Zufelt was sixth with a time of 17:28 and Nate Wellington came in eighth overall with a time of 17:30. They both ran personal bests on the course. Girls – The girls varsity squad placed fourth out of 20 teams and were led by Megan Hall’s seventh-place finish of 21:37. Jenica Dodge’s was 10th with a time of 21:53. The varsity races were three miles. Volleyball Sept. 26 _ The Whitney varsity girls volleyball team finished the week strong by defeating Cordova at home 3-0. The Wildcats won 25-12, 25-10, 25-5. Senior Kaylin Squyres led Whitney with 15 attacks and 11 kills. Squyres also had six digs. Lainey Basquez had 22 assists in the win. Sept. 24 _ Whitney competed in the CIVT Small School Tournament and went 3-2 in five matches. Sept. 19 _ Whitney had a tough 3-2 loss at home against Rio Americano. The Wildcats started out hot by winning the first two games 25-17 and 25-23. Whitney head coach James Todd said his girls just fell apart mentally down the stretch. “This team needs to conquer the mental part in order to be great. (In) years past they have never been this close so this is all new to them,” Todd said. “Playing at a competitive level is something they said they have never experienced at Whitney.” The Wildcats lost three consecutive games 25-22, 25-7, 15-7 to lose the match. “Being this close is something they are getting used to,” Todd said. “We’re trying to build a new culture so we must beat the mental game.” Whitney is now 2-2 in the Capital Conference and 12-8 overall.
