William Jessup’s Warriors sweep doubleheader against Menlo

After a strong preseason the William Jessup University softball team opened California Pacific Conference by sweeping a doubleheader at Menlo College Saturday. The Warriors took a defensive first game 3-1, and then trimmed the Oaks 12-4 in the nightcap. A third game was scheduled but was rained out. Lincoln High graduate Cassie Emerson picked up four hits in eight trips to the plate in the winning effort. Emerson had a double and drove in three runs. Joining Emerson in putting a total of 15 points on the scoreboard were Alannah Johns (3-5, two runs, three base-on-balls, and six runs batted in), Mallory Blodgett (3-6, four runs) and Sara Jones (2-4). Freshman pitcher Emily Buhrkuhl got the win in the first game. Buhrkuhl struck out five batters while giving up five hits and one run. Junior Andrea Lutz secured the second game collecting three strikeouts. The game was called after five innings. Holy Names University comes in Friday for game at 2 p.m., Lone Tree Park, Rocklin. The Warriors and Hawks will then tangle in a doubleheader on Saturday, 2 and 4 p.m.
